Ayurveda observes that the three doshas rise and fall through the day in step with the sun. Each dosha rules two four-hour windows: Kapha (earth + water) in the cool, heavy hours after sunrise and sunset, Pitta (fire + water) when the sun is highest and again around midnight, and Vata (air + ether) in the light, mobile hours of the afternoon and pre-dawn.
Dinacharya - the Ayurvedic daily routine - is simply the art of doing the right thing at the right time: moving when Kapha is heavy, eating when Pitta is strong, creating when Vata is light, and sleeping when the body wants to repair.
Six phases
6 am – 10 am
Heaviness after sleep; move the body, eat light. Sleeping in now leaves you sluggish all day.
10 am – 2 pm
Agni peaks with the sun - the best time for your main meal and demanding mental work.
2 pm – 6 pm
Light and mobile; creativity and communication flow. Avoid overstimulation and excess caffeine.
6 pm – 10 pm
Natural slowing down. A light early dinner and a calming routine set up deep sleep.
10 pm – 2 am
Internal fire turns to repair and metabolism. Staying awake brings a 'second wind' and night hunger.
2 am – 6 am
Subtle and clear; Brahma Muhurta (about 90 minutes before sunrise) is ideal for waking, meditation and study.
